So, the bad news is, CPJA has been remiss at updating our illustrious blog. But the truth is, we have been busy, very busy this summer with various important activities. First of all, we have needed to catch up on all the gossip and discussion about the upcoming new album, “Generations” fronted by the handsome Phillippino Steve “sound-alike.” (More on that later, we assure you…) And of course, we have been plenty busy petitioning our local jukeboxes to ensure that as many bars and restaurants as possible have Journey available to play for all patrons. (see the “Get Journey on the Jukebox” Program…)

However, a much more important petition has come to our attention. Yes, that is a Petition for Journey’s Induction for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At first, we here at Journey were a bit taken aback by the fact that Journey would even need to petition for this. We assumed that it was a given! However, a close examination of some of the comments made by petition signers reveals some disturbing insight into the R&R Hall of Fame Process. For example, signature number 6678 outlines the distinctly political reasons why Journey may be kept from its due recognition.

Readers, we need not remind you that this year and season in particular we are all quite aware of the many gut wrenching political decisions made that are out of the hands of us ordinary small town folk. Therefore, it is time to take a stand; let’s leave politics out of art! Rock ‘n Roll is Rock ‘n Roll, and Journey is the Rockin’-est of them all, end of story. So please help our cause by signing this petition and letting the powers that be know that the hearts of thousands are hoping to see this band recognized, politics be damned.

Oh, and be SURE to comment when you do, the judges like that!

Fingers Crossed!!!!

I was in a waiting room yesterday, indulging in the inanity of People magazine, when I stumbled upon an article that nearly caused me to do a spit take of my Earl Grey. People magazine devoted an entire page to the story of Journey’s new front man, Arnel Pineda. While I commend the magazine on once reporting on something newsworthy, I am appalled that they did not cite the CPJA as a source. Our attorney is currently writing a sternly-worded and vaguely threatening letter – such a flagrant disregard of the ethics of journalism by a national publication will not slip through Justice’s cracks this time!

The other day at the CPJA Headquarters whilst taking a short respite from our rigorous scouring of the world news for tidbits about Journey to keep informed you, our loyal reader, we engaged in a bout of “Journey Escape” for the Atari 2600 – as per usual. Also as per usual, we were taken aback by the general awesomeness of the game – the white-knuckle pace of play, the killer graphics (if one fails to reference an object in the room occasionally, one can become victim to the carefully constructed 8-bit ruse that one is actually running on foot through the cosmos), the dizzying logic puzzles and perhaps most importantly, the soundtrack – a rendering of Don’t Stop Believin’ in Atari beeps.

How is it possible that a game of this magnitude could be so dwarfed in memory by the likes of Pac-Man and Space Invaders? Perhaps, we conjectured, it was simply not properly promoted. Immediately we tasked the CPJA Research Department to provide an explanation. They returned with this promotional commercial which quickly dispelled our theory:

And so, with no other logical explanation as to the lack of success of Atari’s “Journey Escape” we shall have to concede that the reason might forever remain a mystery. We also admit an unchecked flush of pride that the first ever rock video game was a tribute to Journey.

Atari, we salute you.

Journey has named a new front man.

Well folks, the news is good. Don’t Stop Believin’ has been officially declared one of the top 5 rock songs ever. And by “official,” we mean according to the very classy website Votenumber1.com. I mean, they are associated with American Idol, so OF COURSE they are the arbiters of all things cultural. But CPJA will never look a gift horse in the mouth, and is certain that this is proof that there are many out there who, like us, see the true value in our favoritest band. What’s more, the same site has earlier declared Steve Perry as the number 2 Male rock singer ever, second only to Freddy Mercury. This begs the question; what is with all those Queen fans? Don’t they have anything better to do than hang out on the internet all day voting for their favorite band? SERIOUSLY!!

In a world where Journey must share the airwaves on soft rock stations with the likes of Mariah Carey and Dave Matthews, those of us who are relegated to listening to our car radios (due to lack of fancy car stereos…) know the absolute joy that happens when, flipping through the stations, you come across guitar, keyboard and/or vocals notes you know so well. Even though through the wonders of today’s technology, one can listen to any journey song at any time, there is still something magical about the surprise of hearing a song you love come on the radio. Sometimes, it’s almost crushing when you only hear the last few bars of said song, i.e. the swelling vocals of “Lights,” the fading guitar from “Faithfully..” To think, only moments ago you might have been putting up with an old B-52′s song, and you were missing out on genius!

But what do you do when you are lucky enough to hear a Journey tune from the VERY BEGINNING? Let’s just say this tune is “Don’t Stop Believing?” And let’s say you arrive at your destination the very moment the piano begins the simple and encouraging melody, you are actually parking perhaps? Let’s say you are late, and throw in an anxious baby in the back seat perhaps? And a really good parking spot pops up? Do you ignore it? Drive around the block until the song finishes?

Or, better yet, just park and sit in the car until the song ends, maybe singing loudly, even though everyone on the street can see you.

It’s a tough debate, but really, the answer is clear.

Perhaps you’ve been subscribing to the blog for a few weeks now, carefully tiptoeing around the edge of the dancefloor that is The CPJA. It is time, dear reader, to step out from the shadows and into the garish, discoball-spangled light. Throw yourself onto that floor and dance.

Once again, the San Francisco Chronicle proves its merit as a fine media institution by including Journey’s Lovin, Touchin’ Squeezin’ as an honorable mention in a roundup of the “top five” breakup songs. The column cites this particular song due to author Peter Hartlaub’s personal memories of heartbreak, dulled only by listening to the line “it’s your turn to cry girl” over and over. Bra-Vo! LTS did not make the actual top five, which is, in my opinion, a very debatable group; we at CPJA certainly respect the inclusion of Phil Collins’s “Against All Odds,” but we’re not so sure about Justin Timberlake and “Cry Me a River.” What would Steve have to say about this, I wonder?

On that note, I feel the need to state the obvious: The number one Journey breakup song is CLEARLY “Separate Ways.” It’s full of bitterness and angst, and yet abounds with hope for the future. Plus, awesome guitars and keyboard. PLUS… have you seen the video?

I rest my case.

Nevertheless, thanks Mr. Hartlaub, you’ve done us proud!
